I never played this instrument as seriously as I do the piano and guitar. But I used one when I worked as a registered music therapist in a nursing home. When announcing activities over the facility’s PA system, I struck a few notes with the mallet, then made my announcements. When others in my department less musically inclined announced their programs this way at the suggestion of the activities director, the tones heard throughout the building were dissonant, but they got everyone’s attention.
