Silent communication with gestures can be as effective as tone of voice, either positive or negative, when interacting with others and also animals. Gestures involve movement with hands or body or even facial expressions. Pantomime uses body movements to enact expression of some event; the comedian Red Skelton was famous for this technique. Dressage allows a rider to communicate with the horse through subtle body language, sign language uses hand gestures for communication, hand signals can communicate to a working dog what is expected, etc.
A good example of using gestures is from the book Escape from the Island of Aquarius, book two in the Cooper Kids Adventure series by Frank Peretti. Thirteen year old Lila Cooper used gestures and pictures drawn in the dirt to enlist the help of a tall Polynesian native named Candle who shared her faith.
