Note:

For those who don’t know, Blue has been sick for a few days with some disconcerting symptoms.

Hi, everyone. I hope you’re well.

Here, the coffee is hot. The weather is too, but from the sick bed there’s lots of lovin’ from Team Blue.

It was 3:48 a.m. when I finally stopped dancing with the pillows and got up. I’ve been awake ever since, and there’s no sign of more sleep in my future. I only fell asleep around midnight, so I’m already tired.

Blue woke me around 2:30. At first I thought he wanted to go out, but instead he was asking for more water.

Just a note: he has never done such a thing in our entire time together.

One of the most worrying things going on here is the amount of water he’s drinking. So I went back to measuring it out for him, just as we do in class. Whatever is making him so thirsty was clearly bothering him, so I gave him more water and then asked if he wanted to go outside. He did not—or at least he refused to go.

I’ve noticed that Blue doesn’t really like to work at night. Unless there’s a real reason to do something during the dark hours, he’d rather not. I’ve even seen him need to go out but really not want to. So I was about to make him do it anyway, regardless of the hour, when I remembered I’d rationed his water before bed.

So I followed my dog back to bed, and of course, like any child, he went right back to sleep in Mother’s lap. But, of course, the mother could not.

So here I am, writing these ramblings to you.

We’ve a 10:45 vet appointment with Bristol Animal Clinic, and I hope the doctors are every bit as kind as the receptionist.

Until now, I’ve never let anyone but Colonial Heights Animal Hospital work on Blue, but this situation calls for immediate action, and this was the very best option.

So today I meet the folks at @BristolAnimalClinic and hope we find nothing serious with my boy.

Two of my friends took a great deal of time out of their day for me, helping me keep a decent headspace about it all. It reminded me once again just how important friends are. You might not always hear from them every day. You might not always agree or believe exactly the same things. But it’s a damned fine thing indeed when the chips are down and times are tough, they’re right there without being asked. That’s what matters in this hard world we live in.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been studying a great deal when I’m not listening to convention, and I’ve been shown some hard truths about myself.

The takeaways that felt most important were these.

First, don’t put the people who assist you, teach you, or work with or for you on some sort of pedestal or promote them to a status they neither have nor asked for. They’re human, just like the rest of us. When they’re not working and appearing to have it all together, they face struggles and life challenges too.

They’re people with their own lives, ideas, hopes, and limitations, and trying to force them into roles they cannot play simply isn’t fair.

I’ve had it done to me, so I know better.

Yet I found myself drifting down a path I never wanted to travel because what I thought I saw at the end looked dark, gloomy, and quite empty without a couple of people I hope remain in my friendship toolbox for years to come.

The other takeaway was that there is power—deep, wondrous power—in prayer. When people like me, who walk a slightly different path, speak of sending energies, good vibes, or other things that may sound unfamiliar, those things are prayers, requests, celebrations of gratitude, and expressions of joy. It’s all the same thing. Don’t get caught up in the words, for words carry many meanings. God’s still on the throne, no matter our perceptions. You simply can’t stop that power. It’s there, waiting to be embraced by us all.

Nothing can prepare

you for what you will receive

when in the Power you believe.

Believe in a Higher Power than you,

even—and especially—when the darkest times come upon you.

You’ll know there’s Someone walking beside you.

You never have to feel alone.

The Creator is always at home,

ready to pick up the heavenly phone,

to heal,

to share a great blessing come true,

for you to say thank you to.

Always there to share your sadness,

to help you talk through your problems,

whatever that looks like to you.

It’s there for you.

All you have to do is believe.

I promise.

Really.

It’s that simple.

Blessid Be.

To say I’m nervous about today’s vet appointment would be a huge understatement. But I’ve my faith, and I know that whatever takes place, there’s a bigger picture far too large for me to see. So I simply believe, have faith, and ask that our wills align.

I believe we’re going to find something simple, come home with some medication, baby the dog for a few days—as if I don’t already do a bit of that—and then he’ll be all better and ready to go romping around with me again.

For now, Team Blue continues to say, "Keep your nose to the ground and your tail waving at the sky."
