The Buzz of Summer Winding Down – 44 Words

By Patty L. Fletcher

Inspired by Sponsoring Member Robbie Cheadle

Blue and I bounced out the door.

Another late-night walk,

The breeze is alive with scent and sound.

Jar flies,

BUZZZZZ!

All Around.

I don’t know their true name.

Cicadas, Locusts,

different, same.

It’s the sound of summer winding down.

YAY!

Fall!

Coming,

round.

Next up, in the Poetry Place, we’ve author and poet Leonard Tuchyner with two poems which capture the end of summer in vivid clarity.

Here’s Leonard with more.

Cicada Internment

Any day now cicadas will emerge.

This year there is a convergence of arrival.

Two species will rise together,

after being underground for many years,

where they live a humble life sipping sap and dreaming of the time they rise and do the funky thing up in the trees, where they sing their siren songs.

But alas, their trees have been demolished and their turf covered with concrete and tarmac.

They will never see the light of day.

Their songs will be only a whisper in the wind, or simply an imaginary death dirge, which used to be sounds of passion ascending.

Is this the demise of simple insects,

or an existential warning of the passing of man?

——

Pageant Time

Daffodils have finished their lawn party.

Golden apparels are put away.

Long elegant leaves engaged in photosynthesis, forsythias have exchanged gold for green.

Forthwith, we await azalea bloom.

Each azalea follows her own muse,

her personal colors, and her own time,

to reveal her dazzling flowers and hues.

First to bloom, orange and reds already dancing in their cozy nook on the north verge of our house.

A white, west of the oak, has gloried.

Others of purple hues ready to burst,

around that beautiful old oak tree.

Along the road, whites, purples, and pinks are just beginning to show their colors, while burgundy, ivory and red remain plain.

Throughout the yard, myriad scattered bushes play peekaboo, as they suddenly sparkle, around our borders and hidden places.

They surprise me almost every day.

Thanks for reading my work.

Leonard, that was delightful! I wasn’t always a fan of summer, but somehow this year has been pretty good.

Thanks for sharing your yard with us.

Colorful States of Nature

(Pantoum)

By Marlene Mesot

Purple mountains shroud in mystery.

Amber earth ages, no symmetry.

Clear blue water babbles aimlessly.

Timbers tall stand sober, silently.

Amber earth ages, no symmetry.

Greenery grows lush, sweet constantly.

Timbers tall stand sober, silently.

Dry red clay yields nothing stubbornly.

Greenery grows lush, sweet constantly.

Orange-yellow clay smooth soothingly.

Dry red clay yields nothing stubbornly.

Cold gray stones stand silent stalwartly.

Purple mountains shroud in mystery.

I’ll end this evening with a poem I wrote and posted some time back. Since this writing, I’ve begun having episodes of vertigo. They come on with no real warning and leave me leaning this way and that and this causes me to fall.

I’ve begun using a quad cane. His name is Clumpy. I named him this because his feet clump when they touch the floor.

Blue and I are learning a new way to be together, so walks such as the one described here are precious.

Nocturnal Poetic Ramblings of a Manic Muse

Dreams – Reality

A poem of Some Sort

By Patty L. Fletcher

Moon Phase Waning Crescent

I first thought I’d leave the backstory on this poem for after. But when reading, I changed my mind.

When I sat down to write, I was replaying a dream I’d had during the night, which is the reason for my nocturnal ranting. I know dreaming Blue as lost and I couldn’t find him is a direct manifestation of worries I have of not doing enough for my boy. Doing things incorrectly or something ridiculous.

Last evening, during blue’s bedtime relieving routine, I decided to add on some obedience training. I’m trying to get Blue used to heeling in tight places. Sometimes when going through a narrow place, occasionally, I must heel him through, or follow straight behind to clear a doorway facing or some other similar thing and I hit my right side. Blue is a big dog. He has shown his displeasure at narrow tight places without doubt or fail.

People don’t understand what they’re seeing if I correct when I bump up against something, and though I try not to deliver a correction which is too heavy for the situation there have been times when I’ve overheard grumblings from observers.

I can only think of once when I might have been slightly heavy handed with a correction. It was not too much though.

I continue to say, “If Blue won’t mind me here where there is a commodity of safety, he won’t mind when I’m crossing a busy intersection or walking in a crowd.

I prefer to walk and work Blue in the morning, rather than the evening for this reason.

I begin with last night’s feelings when listening to this older and very grumpy yappy dog owner grumble about how “that girl’s mean to that dog.”

That led me to thoughts of a text I received from my father in which he alluded to a Memorial Day gathering then disappeared immediately from the conversation when I asked bluntly about it.

As I wrote, I began to deplete my upset and look forward to a happy place ahead.

Keep reading for more.

No one knows my rage.

Words on a page.

Fears,

tears,

anger.

I’m walking,

working,

relieving,

reinforcing,

obedience training,

maintaining my big, Blue Dog.

We walk,

work,

lightly jog.

For me it’s best in the early morn.

Fog,

silence,

privacy,

the quiet is ours.

Love the early morning hours.

When Blue awakes,

a walk together we’ll take.

Chief Seeing Eye® Dog gets to set the pace.

In his harness, he’s on the case.

No problem too big to face.

Trucks,

cars,

on ramps,

in spaces,

no vehicle belongs.

One day they’ll be old, and blind.

Like me, themselves they might find.

My wish,

that I’ll remember to be kind.

Not someone like themselves, in me to find.

Teeth, I grind.

I’ve made my case.

Spat in their face.

I’ll be going strong.

Long after they’re done singing their shitty song.

Push their gathering in my face.

That’s OK. I like my place.

I’m happy being free to be me.

Come in and visit with me.

Thursdays at 1 PM eastern, join the fun.

What?

Where?

In the ACB – American Council Of The Blind.

No better Folkes you’ll find.

Safe, Respectful, Welcoming, and kind.

See ya!
