Moon Phase Waning

This poem was inspired by the picture shown below.

Friends Barbra Sydow and Chris Mattoon took it while they enjoyed a beach vacation.

I saw the picture in a Facebook post. Saved it to my device, had my Seeing Eye AI app describe it to me and a seed was planted in my brain.

For a little while I said nothing. Just looked at the picture and let the idea grow.

Finally, I worked up the nerve to text Chris with the picture and asked, “May I use this picture?” I explained that I wanted to enter the photo along with a poem I was submitting to a poetry magazine.

Chris wrote back to say, “Of course you can use it.” And I was thrilled.

Time passed, and things changed. I never got to submit to that issue and the idea I had faded like the sands on a beech wash away with the outgoing tide. The seed remained firmly rooted in my mind and last evening while drifting to sleep, with rain falling outside my window, the poem began to bloom.

Sometime in the night, I woke and dictated a sort of poem into my phone then fell back to sleep.

This morning when I woke, the poem had bloomed, and the below is the result.

A rainbow over a body of water
Description automatically generated

Description:

A vibrant rainbow arcs across the sky, stretching from the left side of the image to the right. Below the rainbow, there is a body of water with a rocky shoreline. On the right side, a white building with a stone foundation is partially visible, surrounded by greenery and palm trees. The sky is a mix of cloudy and clear areas, with the rainbow appearing prominently against the clouds. In the distance, there is a small peninsula with more vegetation.

raindrops fall

like tears

wind blows

still

the rainbow glows

clouds roll

sun peeks through

still

the rainbow glows

promises made

words spoken

words fade

promises broken

still

the rainbow glows

waves brake

actions taken

still

the rainbow glows

life goes forward

friends

lovers

come

and go

changes

life is happening

a continuous flow

still

the rainbow glows

raindrops fall

like tears

our deepest fears

hide

in the dark

still the rainbow glows

our creator’s promise

never fades

never broken

still

still the rainbow glows
