Always on the Case a Poem by Chief Seeing Eye® Dog Blue

Written by Patty L. Fletcher

Told by the Chief

April 14, 2023

I am Chief Seeing Eye® Dog Blue.

I’m always on the case.

I take my mommy everywhere she wants to go,

I help keep her safe.

Stopping at steps or curbs.

Watching for car monsters that swerve,

Car monsters that swerve into our path.

A traffic check,

I stop,

Mommy says “Forward.”

I stand still.

“Blue Forward. Go.”

I stay put.

I said,

“No.”

Finally, the car monster rolls away.

“Blue Forward!”

Away we go.

This is how you know.

This is how you know fur sure.

This is how you know fur sure I’m real.

Not a fake.

No more of those stinking fakes can I take.

Keep them away.

They do not eat at table.

Underneath,

That’s where they stay.

Stay,

Stay out of the way.

No bark.

No bark in a store.

Oh! My!

Mommy would roar.

“Pfui!”

She would say.

A correction on me she would lay.

Keep the fake service animals away.

They do not know how to behave.

No growl on the bus.

This is NO!

Behave!

You must.

Sit in the floor,

Sit on the floor unless you’re small.

If you’re small, your job to alert,

Stay on your human’s lap,

So, no one gets hurt.

Please,

Please humans don’t talk to or pet me.

I’m working,

Can’t you see?

I am Chief Seeing Eye® Dog Blue.

I am coming to you,

Coming to you to say,

I am Chief Seeing Eye® Dog Blue.

I am always on the case.

For I do know my job,

And my place.

Patty and her guide dog Blue. Patty has her hair tied back in a low ponytail and rests her right hand on Blue's head. She wears a white shirt with a pink and purple butterfly on the front and light blue shorts. Blue is a handsome black lab. He wears a brown leather harness with a handle attached to the back and is smiling at the camera as he sits in front of Patty. In the background is a brick building with white, windowed doors and a flowerpot overflowing with pink and yellow blooms.

About Chief Seeing Eye® Dog Blue Fletcher…

Chief Seeing Eye® Dog Blue was born in Chester New Jersey, October 4, 2018.

After only 8 short weeks, he was taken from his dog mother and given to a puppy raiser family, where he would live and train for the next year.

When the year was over and he’d passed all his tests with flying colors, he went to live at The Seeing Eye® Guide Dog School and there he began to learn the rest of what he must know to become a Seeing Eye® Guide.

After a few months of arduous training, he was matched with his human mother as her second guide.

Now, he lives in the mountainous land of Kingsport Tennessee where whether working in harness guiding his mother safely from place to place or playing with his beloved doughnut ring he is always on the case.
