OMG! It’s Not Moonday (Monday)

OMG! I woke up this morning thinking it was Moonday morning.

I was rushing around, washing my face, making coffee, and calculating how long I could lie propped up on pillows with Blue when suddenly, with great delight, I realized:

“OMG! It’s not Moonday! It’s Sunday!”

I don’t have to rush. I don’t have to hurry or worry, and I might just have time to find sunscreen before tomorrow.

What am I doing tomorrow that’s got me so excited?

The Friends of Bristol VIP (Visually Impaired) Support Group, which I belong to and help lead, is going on a pontoon boat ride!

I’m especially excited because when I first said out loud that I’d love to do something like this, I had no idea we had a boat so ready to hand. It turns out that when we held our meeting here a couple of months ago, we learned that one of our group members has a son who could take us out on a pontoon boat.

So, we began to plan.

I am not taking Blue on this excursion.

For one thing, I don’t think he’d be comfortable. He does not like vibrating things underneath him. The boat isn’t covered, so there would be no shade for him. And I do not, under any circumstances, want him in that lake water.

I also don’t want to take even the slightest chance that he might become uncomfortable, upset, or excited and somehow end up in the water with me in tow.

It sounds like great fun for the human, and indeed I would love to swim with my dog as I have seen others do, but our lakes just aren’t that clean, and Blue is just getting well. So, after consulting with a trainer from The Seeing Eye, I’ve decided that tomorrow will be a cane-it day.

Sometimes, being a guide dog handler—and following the things The Seeing Eye instills in its graduates—means knowing when to let the doggy have a break.

Considering how long Blue was in harness yesterday, plus the laundry and household chores he’ll help with today, I suspect he’ll be good and ready for one.

Besides, tomorrow morning I’ll have plenty of time to take him out for his morning walk about the square, as I call it. After that, he should be perfectly happy to settle into his crate with his bone and rest while we’re gone.

I’m excited about going, and I hope it will be a wonderful trip.
