When last we left Jane she and Karen were at The Seeing Eye Puppy Raiser Christmas party and Jane was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa Paws. Let us return to this Magickal Tail and see if Jane’s wish will indeed come to be…

Jane held her breath. Could it finally be?

Just then, a big human man came jingling into the room.

“Ho! Ho! Ho! I understand there are some very good puppies, and children in here waiting for presents!”

Jane was very good, and polite. When it was her turn to sit on Santa’s lap she climbed up, snuggled into his arms, and let him tickle her with his beard. She was not quite sure it was real, and it seemed to her Santa smelled just a bit like chocolate, but she let him love on her just the same, and was very happy when Karen joined her to have their pictures made together.

Finally the party was all over with and it was time to go home.

Santa Paws had not come, and Jane just could not understand.

All the way home, she tried not to cry. She did not wish to ruin her family’s joy. Both Karen and Brad were very excited about the toys they’d gotten, and Jane did have a nice bag filled with treats, but she simply could not think why Santa Paws had not come, and now, there was no one to ask.

Try as she might, she could not get her human family to always understand her.

They seemed to always know when she wanted petted, and scratched, or when she was hungry or needed to go out, and once when she’d hurt her paw, Karen had known it right away, but this, she just did not know what to do.

That night, when all was still in the house once again, Jane lay awake in her crate.

She must figure out what the trouble was. Could it be like that story she’d watched on TV with Karen and Brad, when the fog had come, and Santa could not drive his sleigh?

No, that couldn’t be it. Santa had gotten the reindeer to help.

Then what could be the matter? She’d stopped chewing the tree, she was learning very well all the things she was to learn, even Father had remarked how good she was being, so why had he not come?

Could it be true? Did he really not exist?

Suddenly she could stand it no longer. She must do something.

She lie a long time in the dark, thinking and thinking, and suddenly she had it. She would go to the North Pole and ask the real human Santa. Everyone knew that the Santa’s that were in the stores, and at parties like the one for the Seeing Eye puppy raisers and their pups were Santa’s helpers, and that the real human Santa was very busy readying himself and all those toys for his trip round the world on Christmas Eve, but if anyone would know about Santa Paws, it would be him.

As she lie trying to think how to best go about getting to the North Pole, she fell to sleep.

No sooner than Jane had closed her wee eyes, they popped open again. For just a moment she’d felt a cold breath of air blow across her face. Had someone left a window open? When she sat up, she could not believe her eyes. “Why, I must be dreaming. This looks like the North Pole.”

She stood, and her wee paws sank into wet, cold snow. She leaned over, and took first, a sniff, and then, when she was not yet sure, a lick. “It is snow! I do have the shimmering! Just like King Campbell told me, and I, why, I, have come to the North Pole, just as King Campbell used to come and visit us in the nursery.”

At first, Jane was so excited, she could do nothing but leap round in the beautiful fluffy snow, but then she remembered that Christmas would be coming soon, and that she must find Santa Paws, and let him know of all the good little girl and boy doggies all over the world who needed him. She did not understand quite why he had forgotten them, but he must be reminded.

Now, Jane was, just a wee pup, not very big at all, and, not yet very old, so she was not quite sure where to go, or what to do, so at first, she simply wondered around sniffing and looking at everything in young puppy amazement. Soon, the sky began to grow light, and she knew it must be doing the same where she lie sleeping in her crate.

Just then she came upon a door in the side of a snow bank. “Maybe someone lives in here, that I can ask.” Jane reached out a wee paw, and knocked upon the door. It was decorated beautifully with Christmas pictures, and she was careful not to mess any of them up with her knocking.

Just when she thought no one was home, the door popped open and there stood a huge rabbit. “Well, well, if it isn’t a wee golden dog. Whatever are you doing here my dear?” The Rabbit seemed to bounce on his toes when he talked, and his ears wiggled so, that Jane forgot her manners and giggled. “Oh! My, I am sorry!” She exclaimed. “My name is Jane, and I am a puppy from far away. I am learning to become a Seeing Eye dog, but I’ve come on a mission, I am trying to find Santa Paws. He seems to have forgotten all about the good little girl and boy doggies who are waiting for him all over the world.”

The rabbit stood still and thought, “Santa Paws? Seems I heard a story of him from long ago, but I do not think he lives round here anymore.”

“Oh! Dear!” Jane cried, “Whatever shall I do?”

“Now, Now, Young Puppy, let us not get all upset, surely we shall think of something. Why don’t you come in, have a spot of carrot broth to warm up with, and we shall think what to do.”

When Jane and the rabbit were all settled at the kitchen table in front of the fire from the wood stove, Jane told her tail. She told of the big Husky Dog dressed in the red furry suit, who would, on Christmas Eve drive a magickal sleigh with 8 big Husky dogs pulling it along, flying throughout the night bringing Christmas goodies to all the good little girl and boy doggies all over the world, as she finished she said, “And this year there are a big bunch of very special doggies who must get a treat.”

She told the rabbit, who had told her his name was Robert all about Seeing Eye Dogs and all their magickal powers.

When Jane had finished Robert the Rabbit said, “Well, then, there’s simply nothing left to do. We will have to go to the Christmas Castle and visit with Santa-Clause himself. If anyone will know what to do it will be him. Now, let’s see, where did I put the keys to my snow-mobile?”

After much rummaging through boxes and bags, Robert the Rabbit declared, “I found them! Now, let us be off!”

Soon they were zooming down the path, and after a while, Robert the Rabbit began to sing.

“Dashing through the snow, on a snow-Mobil we did go! On a mission far away, to see Santa Paws, and his sleigh!”

When Jane had heard the words a time or two, she too sang, and soon they could see the big magickal castle off in the distance.

When they drew near, Robert the Rabbit cut the engines. “We’ll walk the rest of the way. I understand reindeer are frightened of the noise these things make.”

When all was silent again, they padded through the snow on foot, with Robert the Rabbit bouncing all the way.

When they reached the gate, a big snowman stood blocking the path.

“Hey! Who goes there?” He boomed in a voice that seemed too big and fierce for his fat jolly face.

“You silly snowman, it’s Robert the Rabbit, and Wee Golden Jane”

“Hum mm? State your business.” The snowman called.

“We’re here to see Santa sir.” Jane said shyly.

“Oh! Dear!” The snowman called back, “Santa is much too busy to see anyone now. It’s almost Christmas Eve, you’re going to have to come back again another day.”

“But we can’t!” Jane whimpered, and once again she told her tail. When she was all done, even having again retold the part about all the special Seeing Eye pup hopefuls, the snowman stood thinking.

“Alright, wait here, and I’ll see what can be done.” And with that, he flopped onto his belly and slid away.
