From Accessible Avenue – “Transit Advocacy Toolbox.”

From Ron Brooks:

Hi, everyone. On April 25, 2024, Accessible Avenue partnered with the ACB Community and ACB Media to bring you the second course in a seven-part training program we’ve titled “Transit Advocacy Toolbox.” We had good attendance and excellent participation, and I want to thank each of you who dialed in on Zoom, as well as those of you who joined in Clubhouse and those of you who listened in on ACB Media. And if you weren’t able to make it, no worries. The episode is available on the ACB Media Podcast page. Here’s the direct link:

Course 2 covered Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for public transit agencies, and for contractors and service providers who “stand in the shoes” of those agencies who contract for bus, paratransit, and other services provided by transit agencies. The only areas we did not cover were Passenger Ferryboat and other services; we ran out of time, and ADA paratransit, which we will cover in its own course next month. It was a lot of information presented quickly, but not to worry. I based almost all of the content on the Federal Transit Administration’s 2015 ADA Circular, which is available at the following link. Class materials came from Chapters 1 through 7 and 10 through 12. Next month, we’ll come back for 8 and 9—just in case you want to read ahead.

In May, we have a scheduling conflict during our normal day and time, so we’re moving Untangling Transportation to Thursday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. We’ll be opening up Course #3 in the Transit Advocacy Toolbox, and the focus will be on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) paratransit. We’ll focus on service delivery, eligibility certification requirements, and time permitting, we’ll discuss some of the recent trends in the world of ADA paratransit, some of which could spell significant changes in how ADA paratransit service will look in the future. There will be plenty to discuss, and we’ll take questions and comments along the way, and record the whole episode for anyone who needs to listen later or refer back.

Day/Date – Thursday, May 30, 2024

Time – 7:00 p.m. Eastern/4:00 p.m. Pacific
