My quick answer is simply, “By reading”
I find interesting setting description, good dialog tags that don’t take people out of the story when read, and I learn a lot about the subjects on which I write.
Detective Mystery books are the best ever for finding descriptions of a villain.
A western is the best genre for learning how to write a sheriff who ends up being crooked.
You’d be amazed at what you can learn just by reading for pleasure.
Steven King writes that writers should read as much as a book a day if they can manage it.
I can do that if it’s the right reading length because I speed up the reader voice slightly.
But even if I don’t get a book read each day, I read at least three to four books each week.
If I’m not writing, promoting, or listening to podcasts, odds are I’m reading.
Although the Spectrum streaming app has begun biting into my time.
Even then, I’m watching with a writer’s eye.
How about you?
