Having been raised by English teachers, I learned to not believe that grammar rules are made to be broken. Nevertheless, one grammar rule I frequently break on purpose is to not start a sentence with “but.” But sometimes, I want to use “but” to start a sentence in order to prevent the use of a run-on sentence. I could use terms like “nevertheless” or “that having been said,” but regular use of these sounds stuffy.
