Before the World Wakes
Layers of Morning
In the Morning, with Patty and Blue
Freya’s Day – Friday, July 31, 2026
Moon Phase: Waning Gibbous (96% Illuminated)
I awoke, in the early morn’s false dawn.
I thought about this phrase as I made my way to the bathroom with a yawn.
I called softly,
“Hey Siri, what time is it?”
Then, took a moment to lament that my wonderful watch no longer works.
As that thought, floated away, I thought of what I wanted to do with the day.
I went through only part of my routine, just meds and water, if you please.
I padded back to bed. Snuggled up with my Big, Blue, Dog again.
I lay there listening to the soft sounds the building, nature, and city make.
I thought about putting on my hearing aids, but decided to let them lay.
I stretched, yawned, threw my arm around my dog.
“Blue! You’re a bed hog. Move it, buddy! Get over, let me have more than a sliver of the bed.”
“Moan… Groan…” was all he said.
Finally settled, I lay quiet as a stone, listening, filing sounds away to be thought about later while the worlds around me woke.
Life is made in layers, some do say.
I firmly believe it is that way.
I’ve done several major things in my life. Great jobs, great and terrible friends, lovers, almost husbands, abusers, and more.
Now, I no longer settle. This time it’s all or nothing. Can’t you see it? I’m 58 years old. This time I’m going for broke. I want what I want, and I want what I need. I want and need it with great speed.
I’m working as hard as I can to improve myself. I did it for me first, Blue and you second, and all the rest third.
I’m happy. Loved, gently cared for, liked, and hated too.
But right now, we’re talking about you.
Who, is you?
You are the chosen soldier.

Freya’s Day is the ancient Norse name for Friday, named in honor of the goddess Freya. I use the old day names as a small nod to history and mythology.
Blessid is an intentional archaic spelling of blessed, used in poetry and older English. I chose it for its rhythm, historical flavor, and the tone it lends to my writing.
When I sat down to write, I started out with one thought in mind. Then, as is the way of it for me I drifted off in another direction. I thought about going back to catch the original thread but decided I liked free-flow much better.

Wild with Life A Collection of Mother Earth Poetry
A lush green forest of bamboo trees features a clear pathway that veers off further into the forest. On the path is a man wearing a loose shirt and a hat, walking away into the trees. He is weary but goes on. The title of the book is in red italicized text at the top of this picture. The text at the bottom of the image reads “Poetry by Charles Portolano” in orange letters.
Wild with Life
A collection of Mother Earth poetry
by Charles Portolano
Editor of The Avocet, a Journal of Nature Poetry
Knowing I am wild with life
but once
on this gift we have been given,
this precious gift that we have
been given guardianship of…
“These poems are written by a seasoned poet who has reached the pinnacle of his art with a recognizable and moving voice. The sections of the book invited me instantly in to share their secrets: WHERE TREES RUN WILD, WILD WAYS OF WATER. THE WILD AMONG US, OUR WILDEST TERRAINS, LOVING THE WILD, and SAVING WHAT’S WILD. The underlying driving force is of course the notion of wildness and all that we have lost by destroying it.
Charles edits the highly successful nature journal, THE AVOCET, a must for nature loving poets and writers.”- Christine Swanberg, Poet Laureate of Rockford, Il.
“In Wild with Life, Charles Portolano has deepened his engagement with the natural world he began so movingly in his earlier works. It is a noble, ambitious, and moving work.”- Joel Savishinsky – Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus in the Social Sciences, Ithaca College
Just $15.00, which includes postage, for 90 pages of pure love for our Mother Earth.

For Lainie, feeling unwelcome is only the beginning of her struggles. Her mom is addicted to
painkillers, her stepfather is a felon, and her dad traded her in for a new family.
So what if she’s kicked out of high school? Determined and attractive, Lainie sets out to make
her own path.
Shane, the young man she begins dating and believes is trustworthy, transforms into a
possessive and cruel boyfriend. When Efren, Shane’s older cousin, enters her life, Lainie grasps
onto a sliver of hope, falling in love.
Shane’s obsessive and abusive treatment of her, however, casts a deep shadow over Lainie and
Efren’s chance to find safety and a future free of the fear of Shane’s sadistic retribution.
Will their love persevere, or will Shane’s pervasive and negative influence push Lainie and Efren
apart, forcing them to love secretly?
