Dedication Page

The Blended Lives Chronicles is dedicated to those who work tirelessly to bridge the great chasm which separates the disAbled from the non-disAbled.

It is dedicated to all those who are open-minded, and acceptant. Those who are able and willing to see past the broken pieces of someone like me, and still allow them to be part of their world.

To all who believe “All Lives Matter!”

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I must admit, I’m terrified for you to do so.

The Order of the Night salutes you!

May Harmony find You.

Chapter Ten

A Popcorn Snowstorm

“Moony!” the kids yelled at once as the screen came into focus. “Happy Christmas!” For a moment, it was complete pandemonium as all the kids tried to talk.

“Hang on. Hang on. Moony cannot hear all of you. Now, you girls, go first and tell me what you’re doing with yourselves these days.”

“Lori is—”

“No, Kasandra. It’s not your place to tell,” Jaden said reproachfully to his little sister.

“Lori? Do you have some news?” Laya asked softly.

“Yes. I’m graduating early and I’m going to look at colleges off planet.”

“Off planet now, dear? I don’t think that’s possible.”

“Well—”

Before she could finish, Lyndi came in. “I thought Moony was gonna tell you stories. Let’s all hop up here on the floating mattress. That way, everyone can talk and hear.”

“That’s a lovely idea.” Laya agreed as her daughter pressed the button to set up the floating mattress. “Lori was just telling me about her possible college travels. Is that something you’re going to be able to manage? Are they making exceptions for the higher grades?”

“Nothing’s been decided. There are a select few who may get a travel visa.”

“That’s wonderful,” Laya said, though she felt anything but pleased.

“Moony?” Kasandra asked. “Will you tell us about the Christmas Portal?”

“If it’s okay with your mom. I can always tell a slightly different—”

“No.” Lyndi laughed. “Honestly, mom, I’m sorry to say they hear and see worse when they watch movies. There’s just no keeping the world away. Besides, I’ve heard this story, and I think it’s fine. Let them have their fairytale. It’s not every day a kid can say their grandmother plays a starring role in their bedtime story. I think you should write it down.”

“Yeah!” the others chimed in. Even the boys liked this story, so after listening to the baby coo for a moment or two, Laya said, “Lyndi, may we speak after?”

“Not tonight, Mom. As soon as I get the baby down, I’ve got to call Brooke before he is to leave for another off planet run. Now that things are as they are, I never let him leave the atmosphere without taking time to talk. The kids talked with him earlier, so if it’s okay—” Her voice trailed off.

“Of course, it’s okay, honey. I wouldn’t expect you to do otherwise. I didn’t know he was getting ready to fly back out. Go on now. Put that wee one to bed, get yourself a nice glass of something to drink, and let Moony entertain this bunch awhile.”

“Thanks, Mom. Really. I promise we can talk tomorrow.” Throwing one last kiss to the kids, Lyndi took the baby and left the room. “Okay, everyone get situated, and we’ll have a tale.”

While the kids jockeyed for positions on the mattress, Laya got up and let King in.

Just when Laya thought all was settled, Jaden said, “Oh! We’ve got to have popcorn. Let me see if Mom—”

“No, Jaden,” Laya said quickly. “Wait. Watch.” With a flip from her wrist, popcorn began falling through the air like snowflakes in a storm. Moments later, it was all piled up in a big bowl, buttery and warm.

“Moony, that’s cool. How did you do that? You’re there and we’re here,” they all wanted to know.

“One day I’ll show you, but now, let’s have our tale.” And with that, Laya began.

Chapter Eleven

The Portal Brings Christmas Love

“Now remember, momma says it’s okay for me to tell it just like it happened. Moony sometimes says words you must not say.”

The little ones giggled, and the older ones rolled their eyes, not knowing that even though their Moony couldn’t see, she knew they were doing so.

“Anyway, as I was saying, I woke just after midnight on that early Christmas morn. Though I knew I should be happy, there was a horrible emptiness inside me. My longing for Derrick had become all-consuming. All I wanted for Christmas was to hold him. He’d been mine and King’s trainer and we’d shared some happy times, but when I’d come back to Korponious, my life had somehow turned itself inside out. Due to my fiancé’s abuse, my mental illness had spun horribly out of control. For a time, I’d been terribly lost to the darkness. It was a prolonged period of spiraling behavior, during which I’d destroyed mine and Derrick’s friendship and had damn near killed myself.”

“But you’re better now, right?” Lori asked.

“Yes, darling. I’m well for now. I take much better care of myself than I ever did.”

For a moment, no one spoke. Though the younglings knew there were problems between their mom and grandmother, they didn’t understand them all. They only knew they loved their Moony and never wanted to lose her again.

Laya picked up the tale again. “Grampa Derrick and I had met a few years later at a Blended Lives Federation convention, and while working out our differences, had gotten dangerously entangled in an interplanetary government overthrow attempt when I’d been kidnapped, tortured, and almost killed.

“Derrick had risked his life and freedom to save me and had worked tirelessly once we were reunited to help King and me to rehabilitate, only to be separated by war breaking out. I was in Korponious settling my affairs, while readying to move to Casimian.

“But, because of current travel bans, I could not immigrate. I was, in a word, miserable.

“The crisp damp air from mine and King’s earlier walk outside seemed to linger in my nostrils as I went about straightening the kitchen. I loved and hated this time of night. On one hand, it was peaceful, and my mind could be at rest from the cluttered emotions noticed during the day when everyone was awake. On the other, if I let my mind drift too long in the void, I could get lost in some incredibly dark shadows.

“When I could stand the silence no longer, I turned on some music, and set about sweeping the floor, casting as I went. I swept large lazy circles in a counterclockwise fashion to clear away not only the dirt piling into the middle of the floor, but the pain which was eating my spirit as well.

“When I was done, I knelt and quickly dumped the dirt into the trash can. I called the four quarters and set the circle of white light firmly around myself, and with tears of deep longing streaming from my eyes, began chanting.

“There is no part of my life which does not belong to the Goddess.

There is no part of my body which does not belong to the Goddess.

I am She and She is me. We are one, yet we are we.

Oh, hear my heart’s cry. Hear my plea.

So mote it be. Blessid be.”

“Moony?” Kasandra said.

“Yes, sweetie.

“Did you really believe when you said that prayer?”

“Oh, yes!” Laya answered. “I poured all my will into it. I desperately wanted to see Derrick. Wanted nothing more than to have him hold me in his arms and take me away from all the empty sadness that seemed to cling to me day and night. I felt if I could somehow remove all the obstacles in our path by sweeping them away, like the dirt on the floor, my dreams could be fulfilled.”

“So, if I pray to the Goddess about something, She will hear and answer?” Kasandra asked.

“The creator, no matter what you call him or her, will always hear and answer, love. Just remember, the answers we’re given aren’t always what we want to hear. Just as when momma says no to things for your own good, our heavenly parents also must sometimes say no. But it appeared that night I was due a bit of a gift.

“The clump of nastiness fell into the bin with a soft thump! And as I washed my hands and face at the kitchen sink a moment later, I felt the room shift and the portal just to my left open. I turned ever so slowly, as to not startle whomever or whatever was coming through. I never knew until the being had passed through whether it would be living or spirit, but in either case, whatever it was, it needed to be allowed to come completely through without interruption. To do otherwise could be dangerous for everyone involved. If disturbed, the soul of whomever was coming through, whether living or spirit, could be forever damaged.

“I held my breath and wished for Derrick with all my might.”

The younglings gasped. Even though they knew the story well enough to tell it to their friends, this part always excited them.

Laya continued. “The air swished, and a moment later, Derrick stood solid and living beside me.

“‘You called, my lady?’

“I turned to him and reached out my arms. He accepted my invitation, and a moment later, we were locked in a tight embrace.”

“Oh! a real Prince Charming!” Kasandra clapped her hands with glee.

“Hush, Kasandra,” Jaden chided. “Let Moony tell the tale.”

“Oh! that’s okay.” Laya smiled. “It was pretty cool. Anyhow, it must have been good for Grampa Derrick, too, because a moment later, he breathed, ‘Gods, Laya, I missed you!’

“My heart nearly stopped at the sound of his voice. I breathed deeply of his scent and filed it away for a time when I would want him and not have him. He gently placed the tips of his long, strong fingers under my chin, tipped my face up so he could look into my eyes, and pressed his lips onto my nose, my cheeks, and finally, my mouth. We stood like that for a long, passionate moment.

“And then as he pulled away, he asked, ‘So, have you been just good enough to earn a present, and just naughty enough to deserve it?’

“I smiled, but the happiness didn’t make it all the way to my eyes. Derrick, being the type to notice everything at a moment’s glance, asked gently, ‘Why do I have a feeling my lady doesn’t believe in Santa or Christmas Magick anymore?’

“I took a deep breath to steady myself in a futile attempt at regaining my composure. I knew if I spoke at that moment, my voice would betray me.

“‘Honesty, my Lady. You promised.’

“‘Derrick?’ I began, but I did not have the words to convey what I felt. How could I tell him that these tiny visits, these snippets into what we could have, if only —?

“He gently tightened his arms around me, and speaking soft and soothingly he said, ‘Darling, it will not always be this way. It’s only for a little longer that we must live apart. I know it’s hard, and you struggle, but just be patient, and one day all you desire will be so.’

“‘Can you stay a while this time? Are you expected elsewhere later in the day? Would anyone miss you if you were gone for a while?’

“My voice shook with tears that threatened to fall, as I tightly held on.

“‘Aren’t you expected at your family’s?’ he asked.

“‘I could make an excuse. I’ve been sick.’

“He smiled and kissed me. ‘Aww, my lady, both of us must meet our obligations. We have too much to lose to do otherwise. You have worked extremely hard to regain your life, and with all you’ve had to overcome, I am quite proud of you. I have worked hard to gain a lot of people’s trust, and I must work doubly hard now to keep it.’

“‘When…?’

“‘Shhhh!’ he whispered, ‘Let us just enjoy the moment!’

“He fervently crushed his lips over mine in a long, warm kiss and, when his need was sated, he pulled away and shouted, shattering the silent night. ‘King! Here! King! Come!’

“The big cream-colored Lab Cross leapt from his place at the foot of my bed and pounded down the hall.

“‘Arhrhrhrh!’ Derrick growled at him as he jumped. ‘Come here, you beast! Help me make your momma laugh!’

“They danced around, Derrick holding King’s paws, until they made me dizzy with their laughter and love.

“‘Okay! Okay!’ I laughed, ‘Y’all win!’

“Soon we were all swept away in the moment, and I found myself back in Derrick’s arms.

“‘Tell me one thing you’d like to do, and let us see if we can have it, if only for a little while,’ He said as his hands ran along my back, and his lips rained kisses, which made my skin tingle and prickle down upon my face in between every word.

“‘I want to run in the surf with you and King. I’ve had enough cold, wind, and snow.’

“He laughed into my hair. ‘The beach it is, My Lady, but I get to pick which one!’

“The three of us stood close together. We’d trained King to travel with us long ago, and he did it as he did everything else, with precision and obedience.

“As Derrick and I clasped hands, he said, ‘Are you ready? Open your mind to me.’

“I took a deep breath. I was always just a tad bit nervous when we traveled, but Derrick had taught me well, and as with everything, I trusted his teaching.

“‘Nooo! Wait! I don’t have a swimsuit.’

“‘You don’t need anything, Laya.’

“I could almost swear he sounded just a touch annoyed.”

“Sometimes dad sounds that way when mom says stuff like that,” Jeff, Laya’s oldest grandson, laughed.

Clearing her throat and trying not to laugh at the thought of the things the younglings heard when their mom and dad thought they were asleep, she continued.

“Just then I felt a shifting around us, pressure pushed at us from all sides, and for an instant I could not breathe.

“Then Derrick was holding me, King was running round in large crazy circles barking hysterically and the warm sun was shining onto my skin.

“I stood and took a deep breath of the warm salty air. ‘Where are we?’

“He laughed. ‘We are in Casimia Heights, on my secluded beach, and for the next little while, your wish is my every command. By the time I take you home, I want the magick back in your smile, and in those beautiful eyes.’

“We removed our clothes and held one another in the warmth of the sand. We ran along the shore hand in hand, with King pounding along beside us. We stood in the surf and drank eggnog rum cream cocktails, and we made love on the beach with the heat of our skin melding with the smooth sand for what seemed like hours.

“As the sun set began, Derrick described the beautiful fiery red and orange bursts of color to me, and ran his fingers through my long damp curls, as he held me in his arms.

“‘I love you, My Lady, and one day soon this will all be ours forever. I want you to remember, even when we’re apart, you are forever in my heart, mind, body, and soul. Remember that it is your love which makes me whole.’

“His mouth found mine, and we lay like that until the sun had set, darkness had fallen, and the Casimian moon had risen high into the warm velvet starlit sky. King lay curled up beside us, and in that moment, I could genuinely believe in love and Christmas Magick.

“All too soon, the moment had passed, and Derrick took my hand in one of his, and with his other grasped King’s collar.

“‘All good things gotta end. My Lady, I must return you to your world now. One day—’

“‘Shhhh!’ I whispered, holding tightly to his hand. ‘Don’t make promises you have no idea if you can ever truly keep. Let us just enjoy the moment. Just be in the now! Yesterday is done, and tomorrow’s not begun. Now is good! Let us just keep it and not worry about the rest, and please? Kiss me once more?’

“He leaned down and tenderly kissed my lips, his fingers gently wiping tears from my face as he did.

“‘Don’t cry, sweetheart. I do hate to see tears in those beautiful eyes.’

“Then, like before, I felt the pressure shift around us. Again, for just a moment, I could not breathe, and then we were all back in my kitchen. Then, I felt something warm and wet on my feet.

“‘Oh! Gods! I left the water running!’

“The sink was full and overflowing, the kitchen floor was flooded, and suddenly, King began to bark, howl, and then ran from the room in a jingling, jangling, wiggly, waggly fury.”

“Poor King,” Lori said. “He didn’t like standing in a lake in his kitchen.”

“Silly dog.” Jaden laughed. “He’s supposed to like water.”

“Not in his kitchen,” Lori protested.

“Oh, yes. We thought it was funny, too.” Laya smiled. “For a moment, the two of us could only stand in surprised silence. Then, we began to laugh. We laughed and laughed. We laughed as we cleaned up the mess. We laughed as we piled all the soaked towels into my washer, and we laughed as we stood in the portal, kissing our good-byes.

“As he faded away into his world, I heard Derrick’s voice float back to me, ‘Keep laughing, My Lady! I love you! Merry Christmas!’

“The End.”

***

“Oh! Moony! And your wishes came true. You are there with Derrick and—” Kasandra stopped, a little embarrassed at her babbling.

“It is wonderful.” Laya said. “The only thing that is going to be better than that is when we can all celebrate together.”

“When can that be?” Lori wanted to know.

“As soon as is possible, love. Your Moony would come right now if she could.”

“Can’t you just shift here?” Jaden asked.

“I wish it were that simple. They monitor Magickal movement. If they caught me coming there or you here without permission, it could cause a whole bunch of problems. I want us to all be together and we are going to make it happen. I can’t promise when because I will not make a promise if I am not sure I can keep it. No matter what anyone ever says, your Moony loves you.”

“I don’t know why we couldn’t have stayed there when we came a little while back to find you. I mean, they would have let us, wouldn’t they?”

“Jaden, your dad had to go home for his job, and well, sweetie, it just wasn’t the right time. There are many things that aren’t fair.”

“Mom and dad should—”

“No, darling. Your parents love you, and they want only the absolute best for you. The decisions grown-ups make are hard sometimes, and I know to you they seem harsh, but I promise, one day we will be together whenever we wish. As soon as it’s legal again to shift back and forth, we will visit any time you want that mom and dad say is okay. I promise.”

For a moment, no one said anything, and Laya was starting to feel concerned when suddenly, Derrick popped in with a booming, “Ho! Ho! Ho! Are there any good younglings in here somewhere? Maybe they’ve been so good they get a little treat?”

“Grampa Derrick!” Kasandra squealed. “Yay! Moony made a popcorn snowstorm. Isn’t that cool?”

“It is indeed. Now check your PJ pockets.” They all did, and each found a chocolate Santa inside.

When all the candy was eaten and Derrick had sent a Magick elf to hand out gifts from him and Laya and wash the chocolate away, Lori said, “We’d best be getting ready for bed.” And without another word, she made the floating mattress disappear, and the kids were back on the furniture in the floor of the room with all the little trinkets and candies the elves left piled round them.

“Lori. How long have you been able to do that?”

All the kids fell silent. “It’s okay.” Derrick said. “If your Moony agrees, we can keep it a secret for now.”

“I imagine they have already been doing that. Lori?”

“I started being able to do things about two months before mom’s powers began to show. I have not told them. I am studying with a friend.”

“What friend?” Laya asked.

“Do I have to say?”

“No.” Derrick said at once. “You do not. For now, I will just say that you must be careful how and when you use your powers. If they’re not documented and something goes wrong, it could be a problem. Take care, youngling.”

“I will. Moony, Grampa Derrick, are things as bad as some say?”

“Things are unsettled, and you should do as your parents ask. I know what it is to be a youngling during wartime. It’s hard. You want to sneak out and do things you shouldn’t. I won’t lie and say I didn’t. I did. Most times it ended with Great-Grampa Randall having to come and get me out of some jam or other.”

Kasandra giggled. “Did Great-Grampa Randall paddle your bum?”

Derrick laughed. “Yes, he did. Now, didn’t I hear your big sister tell you it was about bedtime for real?”

“Well?” Lori said with a slight smile. “We could maybe stay—”

“No. Lori.” Lyndi laughed as she came back into the room. “Tempting as it might be to hear Derrick’s tales of his boyhood, it truly is time for bed.”

“I take it the sweet one has gone down for the night?”

“Yes.” Lyndi said with a relieved sigh. “Now that the two youngest are down and these are soon to follow, I’m going for that something to drink mom advised, and have a chat with Brooke. I will call tomorrow, Mom, I promise. Derrick, you look after her and King, you hear?” She looked steadily into the camera and directly at Derrick as she spoke. He knew though she phrased it in a question, it was really a statement.

“Absolutely, Lyndi.” Derrick said, looking straight back at her through the camera lens. “You and Brooke take care as well. These are not great times for anyone, no matter what side they’re on.”

“We can agree on that.” Lyndi said. “Love you all.” And with that, the screen went blank.

Turning into Derrick’s arms and burying her face against his chest, Laya sobbed, “I must go home, Derrick. Lori, Lyndi. They do not know what they’re doing. Who is Lori studying with? Why on Korponious did you tell her she didn’t have to say? What is wrong with you?”

Derrick held her, letting the rage she vented flow out in red angry waves. When her energies were spent and she lay sobbing in his arms, he said, “I can find out who she’s studying with and allow her to feel she has some control. That’s important for a girl her age dealing with all she is right now, and if you were thinking normally, you’d know I was right.”

“Do you think Lyndi heard her?” Laya asked.

“I don’t think so. I was reading her, and she appeared to have only heard Kasandra’s question.”

“Oh, Derrick. I’m going to lose them again. If she turns to the Clear Bloods. Or worse, what if she goes to the Purified? I cannot bear it.”

“We’re going to do all we can to see that doesn’t happen. I promise it. I swear on my life. I will try with all I can to keep us and those we love safe. However, my lady, you’ve work to do too. The first thing I’d like you to do is get yourself back under control. I know you’re hurting. I’m sorry things are as they are. Family or not, Lyndi and Brooke are still listed as Friedman supporters. This makes them by majority rule Clear Blood supporters. This puts us on opposite sides in a bad way. We must keep a balance.” Derrick took her face firmly in his hands. “Are you listening to me?”

“Yes.” Laya answered. For a moment he thought she was going to argue with him, try to deny the pressure was getting to her. In the end, with tears in her eyes again, she said, “Derrick, I’m sorry. This is ripping me up inside. I must choose my duties to the overall picture rather than saying to hell with it and going home to face whatever befalls. The only reason I’ve not chosen that path is because in the end it wouldn’t do a thing but get me captured. I wouldn’t be any good to Lyndi, the younglings or you. Please don’t be angry. Just love me a while.”

Picking her up in his arms, Derrick walked into their private study. He sat down and took her on his lap. “You must get yourself back under control. You’ve started more than a popcorn snowstorm.”

Coming back to herself with a jerk, Laya asked, “Did I make it snow?”

“Yes. Tomorrow, I want you to spend at least two solid hours on nothing but mindful meditation. You must learn to control this. If you don’t, I’ll have no choice but to order you to see Mother Crone. Are we clear?”

Laya swallowed her sobs. “Yes, Derrick.

This is the story of how the author obtained her first guide dog, Campbell, from The Seeing Eye™ in Morristown, New Jersey: what motivated her, the extensive training she had, the special relationship she developed with her trainer, and the good friends she made.

Once she returned home to Tennessee, there were many new challenges to be met and overcome, including domestic abuse. All that was in addition to her chronic conditions of bipolar disorder and fibromyalgia.

With honesty, courage, and humor, Patty Fletcher tells a remarkable story of personal development that is sure to inform, entertain, and inspire others, both blind and sighted.
