3 Kings Day by Anthony R. Candela #Holiday #WordsOfWisdom

The holidays are nearly over. However, I try not to let mine end until 3 Kings Day (January 6), also known as the twelfth day of Xmas or the Epiphany. This is the day that by following a star the three wise men arrive to visit the baby Jesus. The epiphany is the realization of Jesus’ human and godlike features. Although I am a Catholic, I am neither Latino nor Spanish, the groups who celebrate 3 Kings Day the most. They bake sweets, have processions, and give gifts. Nor am I particularly religious. No, my reason for waiting until after January 6 is to prolong the holiday spirit. It is only after the 6th that I remove my artificial fiber-optic Xmas tree and put away the few baubles I have hanging around the apartment. It is a testament to the holiday that more goodwill is generated during the 12 days of Xmas than practically all of the rest of the year. It is a testament to the holiday that it somehow has managed to conflate religion, faith, commercial largess, the spirit of giving, the winter theme, and let’s not forget, a deep-seeded desire of all people for peace and love in the world. That is why I prolong the holiday until, alas, we must return to a colder reality. Let’s not let that reality be a freezing one.
