Though I never learned to read or write music, I enjoyed theory classes in college. Because of my limited vision, I was lucky to have a recording of the textbook narrated by people who could play the examples on the piano. Learning chord progressions and choral harmonizing techniques was fascinating. As a senior, I was fortunate to have an opportunity to work one on one with an instructor on advanced composition and wrote a sonatina. I didn’t put it on paper, of course, but I made it up on the piano and committed it to memory. I doubt I played it for my senior recital because my old-fashioned piano teacher probably turned her nose up at the idea.
