Oh! LOL! When I was a kid and this song was out, I was living at the Tennessee School for the Blind and us girls would get together on the weekend and put on talent shows for our dorm mothers and we’d sing this and many other similar songs from that time. Oh what wonderful memories!

I first heard Sissy Spacek sing this song in the summer of 1981 on the soundtrack for the movie, Coal Miner’s Daughter. At the time, like the woman in the song, I was in Topeka, Kansas, at a rehabilitation center for the blind, and I wasn’t much happier than the poor housewife, distracted by three kids, one on the way, and a husband who calls from a bar and says he’s bringing a few old Army buddies home.
According to Wikipedia, “One’s on the Way,” written by Shel Silverstein and popularized by Loretta Lynn, was recorded and released in 1971 and was the title track on her album by the same name. The housewife in the song compares her hectic lifestyle to that of such stars as Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, and Raquel Welch. Oh! Abbie, it’s wonderful! We had hard times every now and then back then. A lot of us came from families that were, how shall we say, a bit dysfunctional and this music helped us have some fun and leave our troubles behind.
