This morning, as Abbie writes of summer’s heat and noise, I’m snuggled into a plush robe while outside it is a frosty 28 Degrees.

Years ago when I was single and lived in a complex of HUD-subsidized apartments for seniors citizens and the disabled, the maintenance man came to my apartment every year in May, changing the filter in the air conditioner and making sure it still worked. This signaled the start of summer with its warm days, cool nights, and the rumble of compressors of neighboring air conditioners that started and stopped every minute or so with a jarring clank, often keeping me awake at night. My own air conditioner was no better, although it drowned out the noise of the neighboring units. In my opinion, my sense of hearing compensates for my limited vision, and that’s why I’m more sensitive to certain sounds. I shouldn’t complain because the air conditioner kept my third-floor, south-facing apartment cool on hot summer days. Now, although I have fond memories of that building, I’m thankful to…

  1. Thank you, Patty, for reblogging. I’m afraid it’s not much warmer here in Wyoming, either. The wind is blowing, and snow flurries are in the forecast. The good news is I plan to go nowhere today, except, of course, to your community call on Zoom this evening. Thank goodness I don’t have to brave the elements to attend that. Have a great day!
