Over the past few months, while continuing to grow my business as a marketer the most consistant problem I have at every turn is dealing with people who are in many ways educated more so than I will ever be who simply cannot for whatever reason seem to follow instructions. This I must say frustrates me to absolutely no end.
Many times, people ask me things like, “Why can’t I get my work published in magazines? It seems like no matter how hard I try no one wants my work.” Or “Why am I not selling more books? I mean I know I’m just one of many authors, but my reviews aren’t bad, so I just don’t understand.”
While continuing to deal with more “Professionals” in both the writing and business world, I find one common denominator which is, people do not for whatever reason follow instructions.
I don’t know if this is because they don’t pay attention to them when they get them or if they simply have no regard for the rules of the game, but it is my firm belief that the thing that is keeping people from reaching their true potential is their lack of ability to follow the instructions they’re given.
There are reasons for guidelines. There are reasons that people make specific requests, and if you don’t follow those guidelines or obey the requests made of you by the editors or supervisors you work with you’re going to find yourself remaining at the bottom of the professional ladder.
Just this evening I’ve deleted four emails from clients who sent me material that didn’t meet the guidelines I set forth. I used to make allowances. I used to overlook their blatant disregard for the few things I ask of them. But no more.
Ladies and gentlemen we are all but snowflakes in a blizzard of writers and business owners and if we expect to climb the rungs of the ladder of success we must work harder than we ever thought possible to see that we’re the best we can be.
I ask nothing of anyone that I haven’t done or am not doing myself. That has always been a strict rule of mine.
When I was volunteer coordinator of 2-11 Contact Concern, we had a high success rate of phone shifts being filled and referrals given out working for the clients who called for them. The reason for that was simple. My volunteers knew what I wanted from them and they did those things without fail. The ones that didn’t, didn’t last long in my phone room.
Now, here I am running my own business and the work I promote reflects on me. So, I’m going to expect excellence from those I’m promoting.
I always say…
“I’m only as good as the content you provide me to promote.”
So, if you want to be the best of the best and leave behind the rest get in touch to learn how you can work with me to tell the World all about you.
But, if you’re not willing to put your nose to the grindstone and work every single bit as hard as I am please don’t ask.
From this moment forward, Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing (Author, Blogger, Business Assist) isn’t doing anything halfway. From this moment forward it’s all or nothing.
I have some major goals for me and those I service in 2021 but it’s going to require a lot of sweat.
For now, this is Patty who has a podcast to review and upload which she knows is going to be top-notch because her audio editor is the best in the land saying…
Work harder, climb higher, and don’t let the inability to follow instructions stand in your way.
