This week, I have a most fascinating lady to introduce to you.
So, without further delay I give you Valentina.
First, in your own words tell us a little about you.
I am Italian born, my native city is Bari, a beautiful place in the South-East region of Puglia, on the Adriatic Sea. I began my design career as a fashion designer and worked in my own atelier. Growing up in Italy, often I wonder what I could have found beyond that horizon I was admiring every day.
The saying goes: “Be careful what you wish for, it might happen.”
Well, it did happen. One day, as an opportunity was presented to me, I left my fashion work, my family and friends to make a giant leap over the ocean. I landed in United States where I started a new life and a new design business all over again, without knowing a soul. It was very hard, and it didn’t come easy. At times, I even doubted myself to have done the right move, however, I am the type of person that when sets the mind on something, gets it done, no excuses and went on pursuing my goals. One of my clients suggested me to turn to designing homes and to leave the fashion to the Italians. In the States the majority of people don’t spend much money on fashion, but they invest in their homes and properties. She told me that and was right.
I went back to college, I was fortunate my Italian studies were fully approved, I only had to attend a few years to get certified in interior designing. That’s what I have been doing since then. Three years ago, I also became a TV producer and added this fun activity to my design career. I am the host of my shows and produce them under my label: Valentina Design Universe.
In 2008 the country was under a heavy economic recession, it was the right moment to write that book I have always wanted to write. Up to that moment, I was writing articles for local magazines and papers, I needed to think of writing my first book. I did it and wrote five books, while I opened up my three blog columns. My books are non-fictional, they are practical suggestions in design, fashion, cooking and travel. At the moment I am writing one more book in the design fields called: Bring Nature In, To Make Someone Fall In Love. I am also writing a study course for people who want to design their home by themselves without a designer.
The course is called: Be Your Own Interior Designer.
I enjoy writing about the subjects I know, and it doesn’t seem I will stop anytime soon.
Where do you live?
I describe where I live as The Top Of The World, CA. Some people have asked me if it is a city. No, it’s not, it’s my state of mind. The geographical area where I live is Northern California.
Who are the special people in your life?
I have a very small family. The very special people in my life left this world, now I have one niece, 18 years, a professional ballerina, she is very special to me, and I have 1 nephew 23 years.
Do you have any pets?
What keeps you going? I mean, like what inspires you and keeps you moving forward in your work?
Passion. My mum taught me life without passion is not a pleasant journey.
What is your favorite song?
Classic: Clair de Lune by Debussy. Modern masterpiece 1967: A Whiter Shade Of Pale.
What is your favorite movie?
I like two movies: Midnight in Paris and Dead Poet Society.
What is your favorite book?
Da Vinci’s Code by Dan Brown. It’s my absolutely most favorite.
What is your favorite food?
Mussels in a wine/garlic sauce with fresh crust bread.
What is your favorite quote?
Get up, Dress up, Show up.
What is your favorite affirmation?
Have no fear of perfection, you will never reach it – Salvador Dali.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
I am not sure, at times I am still learning English, but I know I can’t stand inept and idiotic politicians.
What do you think your best strengths are, and how do they help you in your work as a writer?
I am disciplined, stay on top of things and pursue my goals.
When I say I am going to do something, it’s already done.
What are your weaknesses, and how are you making them stronger?
I never tried to make my weakness stronger, it is pointless, basically I don’t listen to people who want to be bossy or feel superior. I just ignore those people instead of trying to understand them.
What is your dream for the future, and how does it relate to your work as a writer?
I am a big fan of theatre. I dream of writing at least one comedy as a theatre play and creating costumes for that comedy. Perhaps, I have not yet internalized it yet and it is a real dream for me. We will see.
What is your preferred way of communicating, and how can someone reach you if they wish to buy from or work with you in some way?
Communicating with me is easy, I am on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, through my blog, and various social platforms. My books are on Amazon and Barnes&Noble
